O'Neil auditioned for her third series of Canadian Idol in the early stages of 2005 when she was still at high school. She was able to make it into the top tier of contestants following the judges' praise for her voice. O'Neil was praised by the jury. But she lost badly in the Top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were shocked by this and informed the crowd that Melissa was the most talented contestant.
